Its that day again – our Independence Day – a day when we humbly thank and raise a toast to our nation’s heroes for having secured us a fertile and proud nation. A super-charged optimism is inevitable on this momentous day – as @bhogleHarsha tweets “there is still no greater emotion than seeing the flag go up and the anthem sung”.

Any nation is also a collection of its individuals and their collective efforts. Perhaps good to then look at two objectives to maximise our individual potential this year – with a view of adding to the nation’s greatness through it:

The first: Reduce dependency on things we hold as excuses for not doing what we know we ought to be doing. You know how it goes – “If only I was financially independent, I would concentrate on my art as opposed to this work I do that I don’t love”. Or “My dad didn’t educate me enough, and I have to therefore be content with this job. If only…” and so one…

So maybe we should just put the top 3 excuses onto our whiteboard and look to strike them off in time for the next Independence Day – if we do, the nation would rejoice along with us.

The Second: Consciously become aware of our interdependent world and contribute whole-heartedly – the network effects would light up our world. The ecosystem is more connected than it was ever before – and we have the choice indeed to participate in circles that have great impact.

Take an every day life and just chalk the ecosystem:

—– Your home – built and maintained by an army of civil contractors, plumbers, electricians, security personnel…

—— Food – grown, processed and distributed through the efforts of thousands of farmers, industries and logistics through the world

—— Your identify – established through a massive team of universities, enterprises and networks

—— Your communication – fuelled through tons of fibre optic cable which stretch across crowded streets and massive oceans, satellites orbiting the earth, entrepreneurs, behaviour specialists, device makers..

—— Your purpose in life and belief system provided through a maze of science and religion, sustained through places of worship, masters, observatories, laboratories around the globe

—— and most important – an emotional support system provided through family and friends – that encourage and motivate you to be yourself (aka the best you can be..)

and so on….

The first (reducing dependence on excuses) will perhaps bring in the power of personal choice and control into one’s life, acknowledging and participating wisely in the second will allow one experience a state of wonder at the complexity of the world and contribute ever so significantly. From adopting conservation principles, to providing solace to our elder and underprivileged brethren, to eating more wisely, to grooming our family/ colleagues/ friends with empathy – will all go a long way in making our world a better place!

And to close this note, wishes for a very happy Independence Day to everyone!
